Some new cards

A few new cards to show off today! First is a 1971 Topps Willie McCovey that I got in a TCDB trade for a 1972 card that was staining my eyes everytime I looked at it and harming my brain, just knowing its hideousness was in my house. It's got. And I got this lovely card in return, even though 1971 is near the bottom half of my 1970s designs rankings. I'm not a fan of all lowercase. The English Major in me scorns it when Topps channels ee cummings. I also don't like the back design which features an ungenerous one year's worth of stats in addition to "LIFE" stats.

Next up is a 2022 Topps Orange Stars Andrew McCutchen which was a gift from my father. There were only 99 of these printed, apparently, and it was rather thoughtful of him to get it for me as it's not something I would have sought out myself, I don't think.

Another TCDb trade receipt was this 1993 Stadium Club Master Photo oversize card. I've never understood these, but that's ok.

I hope that you are enjoying the baseball season after about 12 or so games for each team. I have watched or listened to games everyday, taking advantage of my MLB TV free subscription through T-Mobile. I have not been that impressed with the service since ESPN took over; but I am also hopeful that it improves. For example, one game the other day, Cubs versus somebody, the radio was actually static-y like I was in a car in 1987 listening to the AM station. It was so bad I had to switch to Tampa Bay, or something like that.

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Earlier this year I realized that 1971 Topps backs are basically copies of the 1960s Post design and now I'm wondering why it took me so long to see that.

And the Master Photos is an interesting concept from the era when printing full-bleed photos required you to trim off an eighth of an inch on all sides. The Strawberry doesn't really offer much more compared to the trimmed image but others (like 1992 Wade Boggs https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/208/cid/599534/1992-Stadium-Club---Master-Photos-5x7-NNO-Wade-Boggs or Strawberry https://www.tcdb.com/ViewCard.cfm/sid/208/cid/599546/1992-Stadium-Club---Master-Photos-5x7-NNO-Darryl-Strawberry ) do. Looking at TCDB though it seems like the 1992 Master Photos were a genuine attempt to offer a view into the process and then the 1993 set was slopware.

    1. Holy crap. Ok, so the green or gold border shows the crop from the card? I get it now. I always thought that was just decorative whatever to pretty-up the card. Thanks!!!!!

I see it now with the Post, too.

    2. Exactly. If you compare it to your base 93SC Strawberry you should see how it works.

When Topps released them as box toppers a couple of years ago they totally fucked it all up by shrinking the cards and totally making up the crops so that the gold borders were indeed decorative stupidity like you suspected.
