Days of nothingness

The days off from baseball Wednesday and today are brutal.

I heard an interesting thought the other day on the radio regarding the Home Run Derby, the All-Star game, and the All-Star Break, and that was to give the players the whole week off. HR Derby on Tuesday or Wednesday; AS game on Wednesday or Thursday. Resume games Monday. That might help some of the "stars" participate in the derby and not excuse themselves from an appearance. Thoughts?

Speaking of All-Stars, Stan Musial was an All-Star 24 times in his 22 year career. He was born on 21 November 1920 in Donora, PA and exactly 49 years later, Ken Griffey Jr was born the same day in 1969 in the same town. That's cool.

Collecting rookies can be prohibitively expensive. It is largely a guessing game and has been throughout time to try to gauge which rookie card will earn value and retain value and continue to grow in value. For the most part, I am cheap; or, I am at least reasonable about what I can and cannot afford. Rookie cards are not really in my collecting purview. So I thought up collecting the last cards of Hall of Fame players and it is proving to be both fun and economical.

But! Some of the older players (some of the true Hall of Famers) are expensive. I don't exactly know what I mean by expensive because I mostly stay in the .20 cents to $2 range! I had long wanted/needed the 1963 Topps card for Stan Musial and after about three years of periodically searching, I spent about two weeks looking at available cards and finally bought one that looked good online. And it looks good in person, too.

This is my second Musial card in my collection; the first being the 1988 Topps Turn Back the Clock which depicts this very card!

I need to organize my older Last Topps Cards of Hall of Famers better and when I do I'll take a picture or two and do a post about it.

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. I really don't care about the HR Derby so I'm not desperate to see stars perform in that, and taking an entire week off in the middle of July seems like it would just cost MLB money. Even 4 days is too much, it's Day 4 and I'm dying without a game to watch.

    Nice Musial.
