Last Topps Cards of Hall of Famers: Jeff Kent Edition

When I started my side infinity project of "Last Topps Cards of Hall of Famers" I knew that some would be hard to get: 1969 Mantle, 1956 Robinson; 1958 Williams, to name a few. One one of the last few I need is relatively obtainable for a reasonable price. And it feels like a joke to say "I have to get Jeff Kent's card now." But the advantage is, being out only .18 cents or so, I can keep the project going year by year as more and more common-ish players are voted in.

And so that leads to this 2008 Jeff Kent card with the Dodgers. I got it in a trade on TCDb so I guess I paid the price of a current stamp, .78 cents, for it.

Notice the absence of leading the league in ANYTHING. Even in the year, 2000, in which he won the MVP.

Welcome to the Club, Jeff Kent. I guess.

In other news, the 1980 set build is going along decently through TCDb trades. I got a slew of needs the other day from a nice member of that community which knocked out a number of HOF players. The Schmidt may one day be replaced.

The 1969 card I grabbed just to make the trade a little closer to even in terms of the number of cards going out and coming in. It might be flipped if I can find a match for it. If my numbers are correct, I'm down to needing 12 cards: Bench, Carlton, Niekro, Murphy, Ozzie Smith, Brett, Seaver, Rose, Ryan, and Joe Morgan, plus the A's team card and the Strikeout leaders card. Not bad.

Thanks for stopping by.

  1. I forget where you are on the steroid stuff but one thing that's been driving me nuts are the same "no steroid cheats" guys also complaining about players like Kent who weren't the biggest stars and never led the league in anything during the steroid era.

    1. I don't have a problem with the steroids for pre-Mitchell report people. I don't know what that makes me; but since PED guys are already in, then the players they are keeping out of the Hall due to spite or whatever, should also be in. I'm embarrassed for the sport that Kent, Baines, etc are in the Hall of Freakin' Fame before Bonds and Clemens...and even Rose.

    2. Okay that's fair. Once Selig went in it made ZERO sense to keep the rest of the steroid guys out. And until those guys go in it makes zero sense to enshrine the guys who weren't as good as them. Kent's numbers were great because of Bonds. I don't mind him being in (most HR as a 2nd baseman might be weird but has a certain honesty about it) but it's absolutely highlighting how stupid the sport is being.
