I thought I'd start with the card this week! This it he 1952 Bowman Ralph Kiner card. I am chipping away at his playing year cards, having started collecting him in the 1950s with the 1948 Bowman and 1953 Topps. The card is really nice though as I type, it looks much darker than in my chromebook's image viewer. Weird. This one has the glorious rounded corners that all "super vintage" cards should have. I think of "super vintage" as anything 1966 and before. It is arbitrary. So then I guess I think of vintage as being 1967 to 1983, maybe. And then modern vintage is 1984 to 2000. Also, the card has no noticeable creasing.

Michael Kay is a terrible baseball announcer. If you ever have the chance to listen to him call a game, don't: do something else instead.
I dislike the term "unanswered runs". It is really stupid. They've been saying it a lot because of the Rays comeback against the Orioles on Wednesday. Down 8 to nothing, they tied to up and then went on to score four more. There is very much an "answer" for these runs being score and the box score and game recap will tell you all the reasons why.
How do you feel about MLB removing the Oakland 'reverse boycott' game from a couple of years ago from the baseball archive? I find it cowardly and pointless: we all know it happened!

I really love the '51 and '52 Bowman sets. I don't collect individual players but I might convince myself someday to collect one of those sets.
ReplyDeleteI haven't watched a game on YES for 3 or 4 years solely because Michael Kay broadcasts the games. Also, MLB -- like most corporations these days -- is committed to making itself look good at all times and erasing anything that does not -- reality be damned. So, not surprised.
Good point about MLB just trying to make stuff disappear like any old corporation. Oh! If you go for those sets, or one of them, then good luck!
DeleteAs a Yankee fan, I've never liked Kay. Always like John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman. Most of the TV people are interchangeable and forgettable. However, their new radio announcer, Dave Sims, may be the worst I've ever heard. He can't call a game! Here's a typical Dave Sims call: "Ball's hit to center field. Judge comes over to get it." Fly ball out? Ground ball hit? Who knows? Have to figure out by context clues after. Makes Michael Kay seem like Vin Scully.
