Sniffing around eBay one day in February, I found a "card" for Darryl Strawberry that did not look familiar in any sense of the word.
I find it hard to describe or define a thing that is made of solid gold to be a "card", but I suppose it can be so. There was nothing in TCDB about this "card", so I sniffed more and more around eBay looking for other examples of what turned out to be the 1998 Bleachers 23 karat gold cards. I found several, and so added a set and created a checklist.
Not really sure what Bleachers is or was, but the cards in the "Greatest Champions" set seem to be just a few. I found that the Strawberry, Gooden, and a few others had a similarly designed COA and so concluded they likely were each created at the same time. The card comes encased in something, plastic I guess, and also inside a box.
Are these photos the greatest: Nope. But I hope they show a flavor for the "card" which looks better in hand but is hard to read any way you slice it and dice it. There were a number of other 23 karat cards they made in the 1990s that were created for the 500 Home Run Club and a few other things, but I did not go down those rabbit holes because the players (Griffey Jr, Nolan Ryan, Cal Ripken Jr, etc.) are not ones that I presently PC.
Do you have any gold cards or coins?
Thanks for stopping by.
