The TV show Whose Line Is It Anyway? is fun. I love watching it from time to time. The performers are given points for their efforts, but the points do not matter.
If you help out on TCDB you can earn points, too. They, likewise, really do not matter but it is fun to see them accrue. At one point a while ago on the dropdown for my user names I noticed the word "Star" there. I have no idea what that meant. I noticed then in my profile that I had around 4,600 or so points, so I thought to myself, let me see what happens if I reach 5,000 points, a nice even and round number. So I started cropping uploaded cards, trying to find images of cards that were missing, and etc. Once I eclipsed 5,000, that "Star" changed to "Superstar".
I puffed out my chest a little bit that day, and then decided to aim for another milestone: 10,000. So I spent too, too, too much time cropping and doing the other things. What other things, exactly, earn points is unclear to me: like, for example, if you reject a card for being a problem, then I do not think you get a point: but you should because you took the time to review it. Oh! I actually just found a place in the FAQ about points. Well, one evening I reached 10,000 and there was no update to my status so I shut the computer down and went to bed feeling sad, dejected, and disillusioned.
The next morning I cropped another card or two, checked my points total which was at 10,002 and that's when I noticed that I was upgraded to "Hall of Famer" status. Nice!
I'm continuing to crop and stuff but with less urgency at the moment. It is fun to do because I get to see cards I might not otherwise notice. I focus on baseball, and suffer through the other sports and non-sports, and miscellaneous stuff. But once thing for sure, is TCDB contributors suck at following directions. They photograph and try to get them through or take watermarked stuff from COMC and it is just awful. Some people can't even scan a card properly (It's actually Not. That. Hard.) It must be because they are rushing or lazy or impatient or a Luddite.
Here is the most recent card I added to my TCDB collection:
The more I look at 2025, the more I dislike it. It took me almost two weeks to realize that DHs actually do have a position dot on the bottom right of the card. As a right-handed DH, I would have rather had McCutchen's dot on the left side of the diagram, to reflect where he DHs in the batter's box. Switch hitters could have two? The silver color on Ohtani's card, below, is kind of hard for me to see, even though I now know it is there.
The team name up the side is awful. I have seen some cards with abbreviated team names or cities: dislike this as well. I do not like the block lettering of the players first name. The last name plate for the players is terrible (unreadable on these two cards). I do not care for the swooshy lines either that start on the left, turn up the card, curve right, goes straight and then curves up left again. It resembles a road I travel to work: maybe that is why?
I like that they gave McCutchen card number 42. And I love the full stats on the back. So, it is not all negative!
Thanks for stopping by!
I've seen my meager point total on TCDB before and wondered how I'd go about accumulating points, so this is informative, though I doubt I'll have time to do anything about it.
ReplyDeleteI'm OK with the 2025 design. I do not understand collectors who like the foil. It'd be fine (and readable) without it.
I've contributed in the past and would like to do more, I just have a hard time motivating myself to do so.
