Scattered throughout Ernest Hemingway's 1952 novella The Old Man and the Sea are references to Santiago's love of baseball and curiosity about how the games turned out from reading about them in the newspaper. Most of the references concern the New York Yankees, Joe DiMaggio, and DiMaggio's bone spurs. However, there are also mentions of the Cleveland Indians, Detroit Tigers, Philadelphia Phillies, Cincinnati Reds, Chicago White Sox, and . The only other player mentioned by his full name was Dick Sisler. Last names of players/coaches/managers mentioned are Luque (Dolf Luque), Gonzales (Mike Gonzalez), and McGraw (John McGraw).
The novella was written from December 1950 to February 1951, if that is helpful in contextualizing the players and teams referenced. Have you read this? Do you collect baseball cards of players mentioned in fiction?
I do not have any cards of DiMaggio or Sisler. Or any of the others mentioned in the book. However, of the precious few cards I have for 1950 and 1951, I do have a Cincinnati Reds player:
Thanks for stopping by!
I haven’t read the book, but need to. As far as cards of players mentioned in fiction, not that I’m aware of. I wonder if Hank Aaron is mentioned in any works of fiction?
